46th International Physics Olympiad IPhO 2015 :
IPhO 2015 Participation in IPhO 2015 for Indian nationals is only possible through a rigorous three-stage selection process conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education and Indian Association of Physics Teachers.

The logo of the 46th IPhO combines the depiction of a well-known concept in physics and a representation of the Indian flag.

The bending of light due to a massive object is a prediction of classical physics as well as Einstein’s general theory of relativity. This bending enables a star directly behind the Sun to be viewed during a total solar eclipse, a phenomenon which is depicted in the logo. However the angle of deflection is underestimated in a classical approach, but can be correctly obtained using the general theory of relativity. The confirmation of the exact amount of bending predicted by Einstein’s theory during a total solar eclipse in 1919 was one of most celebrated events in the history of science.

The three colours, saffron, white and green, are from the national flag of India. The top band is of saffron colour, indicating strength and courage. The white middle band symbolises peace and truth while green represents the fertility and growth of the nation.

Venue:
The 46th International Physics Olympiad will be hosted in Mumbai (formerly, Bombay), the capital of the state of Maharashtra in India. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and is blessed with a natural harbour that has contributed in a major way to the growth of the city as the country’s financial hub. Here the medieval and modern co-exist; with a blend of Gothic, Victorian, Art Deco, and contemporary architectural styles. Many buildings, structures and historical monuments still remain from the British era.

People from all parts of India have migrated here over the years to make Mumbai a vibrant, multicultural and cosmopolitan city. Mumbai is home to some of India’s premier scientific institutes and academic institutes like Tata Institute of Fundamental Reserach (TIFR), Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), University of Mumbai (MU) and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). Important financial institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, have their headquarters in Mumbai. Mumbai also has the hugely popular Hindi film and television industry- Bollywood. The city’s business opportunities and good educational institutes attract people from all over India, making it a melting pot of many communities and cultures. Public transport systems in Mumbai include the Mumbai Suburban Railway, Monorail, Metro, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses, taxis, auto rickshaws and ferries. The trains and the buses are the backbone of the city carrying more than 12 million passengers every day.

Host Institution:
HBCSE is a National Centre of the TIFR, Mumbai. The Centre aims at promoting equity and excellence in science and mathematics education from primary school to undergraduate college level, and encourages the growth of scientific literacy in the country. It has a wide spectrum of inter-related activities which includes research and development concerning science education, teacher education, science popularization and talent nurture. It is the nodal centre of Olympiad programmes in mathematics, physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and junior science. Another important programme is the National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS), concerning tertiary science education in India. It runs a Graduate School in Science Education. Students admitted to HBCSE Graduate School work towards the Ph.D. degree of the TIFR which is a Deemed University.
