Pookkalam Contest :

The ninth edition of Parle The Hindu-Metro Plus Pookkalam Contest, powered by SBT and Chungath Jewellery, will be held in Kochi, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram on September 10, 11, and 12 respectively. The contest, first held in 2007, has been witnessing increased participation over the years and has become a top contest of its kind.

Venues of the contest are as follows:
Kochi: Oberon Mall, Vytilla.
Kozhikode: Sri Gujarati Vidyalaya Association Hall, Beach Road.
Thiruvananthapuram: Government College for Women, Vazhuthacaud.

Prizes:
The teams adjudged first, second and third will receive Rs.20,000, Rs.12,500, and Rs.7,500 respectively. Ten teams will be given Rs.1,500 as consolation prizes. All teams will be given Rs.750 as reimbursement for the cost of flowers after the prize distribution. There will be special gifts for all participating teams.

Crunch contest:
After the Pookkalam contest, a Parle Biscuit crunch contest will be conducted for children in classes 1 to 4, 5-8, 9-12 and also for women aged 18 years and above. Winners will be given gift hampers from Parle.

Traditional attire contest:
** Participants of the pookkalam contest, both women and men, can compete for the best traditional attire contest. The best traditionally dressed team and two individual participants will be given exciting prizes by Chungath Jewellery. There will be other exciting contests for the participants and visitors. Entry for visitors will be from 2.30 p.m.

** Title sponsor of the event is Parle Products. State Bank of Travancore and Chungath Jewellery are ‘powered-by’ sponsors. Oberon mall is the venue partner in Kochi. All teams should register in advance, over phone or by e-mail. Phone numbers and e-mail IDs are as follows.

Terms and conditions:
** Only 50 teams will be allowed in the contest on a first come, first served basis. Each team should have five members, including the team captain, out of which three should be women. All team members should be above 15 years of age.
** ‘The pookkalam should be prepared within two-and-a-half hours, which includes the time for drawing and flower arrangement. The pookkalam can be a circle or a square but the diameter/length and breadth should not exceed 5 ft.
** It should have a minimum area of 19 sq ft and a maximum of 25 sq ft. Natural flowers and leaves alone should be used. Flowers required for the pookkalam contest will have to be arranged by the contestants.
** Institutions can depute a maximum of three teams for the contest. Harmony of colours and shapes and neatness of the pookkalam will be considered by the jury.
** All registered teams should report to The Hindu Metro Plus Pookkalam contest information counter at 8.30 a.m. for allotment of number and space.
** The decision of the jury will be final.
** Family members of the staff of The Hindu and the sponsors are not allowed to participate. The teams that do not follow the above set of rules will be disqualified. Right of selection of the teams will rest with The Hindu .
