In such a scenario where the State tries to accelerate its development process and cope up with increasing energy demands, there exists various energy related challenges not only in state or national level but in global level also. The major challenges of Growing Energy Demand, Peak Power needs, Lower Energy Intensity, inadequate exploitation of Renewable Energy, Obsolete Energy Technology and supply of Energy for development of the rural sector needs to be addressed for sustaining the economic growth.

Conservation and energy efficiency measure are thus given a central role in the state level energy policy. A movement on energy conservation has already taken shape which strives to significantly reduce the need for new investments in energy supply. Massive rural electrification to make power available to all requires promotion of energy efficiency and its conservation, which is the least cost option to augment the gap between demand and supply.
