The International Earth Science Olympiad :

The International Earth Science Olympiad – IESO, was founded as one of the major activities of the International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO). It is an annual competition for secondary school students.

The main aims of the IESO are to encourage students interest and public awareness of Earth Science and to enhance Earth Sciences learning and to enhance Earth Science teaching/learning at school level. The IESO aims further to foster friendly relationships among young learners from different countries and promoting international cooperation in exchanging ideas and materials on Earth sciences and Earth sciences education.

So far, the Earth Science Olympiad program in the country involved four stages:
(i) National level Entrance Test,
(ii) Training Camp culminating in the Indian National Earth Science Olympiad,
(iii) Pre-departure training camp and
(iv) International Earth Science Olympiad. The Earth Science Olympiad (ESO) is conducted by the ESO Cell at the Geological Society of India constituted by the President, Geological Society of India.

The IESO is supported by the Ministry of Earth Science (MoES), Government of India as one of its outreach programme for promotion of Earth Science.

Duration : 90 minutes

Type of questions: Multiple-choice questions.
Eligibility : “ Students of IX, X,XI & XII

Test Centres :
AndhraPradesh, Assam, Biha , Goa ,Gujarat ,Haryana ,Himachal Pradesh ,Imphal ,Jammu & Kashmir ,Jharkhand , Karnataka ,Kerala ,Madhya Pradesh ,Maharashtra ,Mizoram ,Meghalaya ,Manipur ,New Delhi ,Orissa ,Punjab &Haryana , Rajasthan ,Tamil Nadu ,Uttar Pradesh.

Application procedure :
Please send the applications to the In-charge of the Test Centre (Details in the Test Centers page) along with the application fee of Rs. 50/- by money order or demand draft favouring the test centre in charge.

Certificates and Awards :
The 20 students selected for the Training Camp will be awarded Certificates of Participation. The four students selected for the IESO will be awarded Certificates of Merit and Cash Prizes (Rs. 5,000/- each).

The Earth Science Olympiad Programme will follow a four-stageprocedure:
** National Level Entrance Test (ET)
** Training Camp and the Indian National Earth Science Olympiad (INESO)
** Pre-Departure Training Camp
** Participation in the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO)

Note:
** For the first stage Entrance Test, a modest fee of Rs. 50/- will be charged and no TA/DA provided. Free boarding, accommodation and travelling allowance as per norms will be provided to students selected for the Training Camp. No fee would be charged for subsequent stages.

** The expenditure including international travel of official Indian teams and related expenses like travel insurance and visa fee will be borne through budgetary provisions passed by the Earth Science Olympiad Cell. Local hospitality will be provided by the host country of the International Earth Science Olympiad. All financial assistance mentioned above is subject to the approval of budgetary provisions by the Government of India.
