Take the Refashioned Challenge/Contest 2015:
Did you know that the average life span of a garment, with moderate use, is 3 years? And that 80% of all the clothes we discard are perfectly reusable?

Yet, every year, 10-20% of all textiles in the fashion industry are wasted. sending thousands of tonnes of used clothing to be landfilled. Many of these garments have either never been worn, have been used only sparingly and are often in great condition. Up to 95% of the textiles landfilled every year can be recycled or reused, but, only a tiny percentage of them actually are.

Textiles also require huge volumes of water to be used at various stages of manufacture and contribute greatly to CO2 emissions. The amount of water used to make the average T-shirt is the amount an adult human drinks in 3 years!

By recycling/upcycling even a single garment, you can make a difference!:
Upcycling is like magic because it turns old things into new things. When you upcycle, you’re processing a garment to make it even better than the original. Upcycling clothing is great for it puts an end to those wardrobe blues. And, who wouldn’t like something new to wear every day!

Take the Alternative’s Refashioned Challenge:
Remake your wardrobe in ways that are easy, affordable, and fun, leaving you with no shoppers’ guilt. What’s more, by extending the lives of your beloved garments and keeping them out of the landfills, you’re helping make a greener planet:

Whether it’s that old lehenga that’s gotten too tight round the waist, those boring shoes that you’ve owned forever, or your favourite skirt that a nail snagged, there’s a cool, new outfit hiding inside them all. And you have the power to bring them back in cool new avatars! So, get creative with DIY projects, turn that baggy shirt into a cute crop top, head to the garage sale rather than to the mall, and make yourself a garment that’s uniquely you!
