What is FOSSEE ANIMATE Animation Hackathon?

ANIMATE 2024 is an online Synfig Studio 2D Animation Hackathon organized by FOSSEE, IIT Bombay. India is known for its creativity and resourcefulness, with innovation happening everywhere, from busy cities to quiet villages. With ANIMATE 2024, themed as Celebrating India’s Innovation, we want to highlight and celebrate India’s innovative spirit. So get started, avail this opportunity to upgrade your skills, and enhance your career. We welcome newbies and veterans – from school students to professionals and FLOSS enthusiasts – to take part in this Hackathon. Last Date of Contest is 26th April 2024.

Eligibility to Participate in the ANIMATE

** The hackathon is open to all.
** Participants can join as individuals or in teams (maximum of 4 members).
** High school/college students, faculty, and professionals (such as animators, designers, etc.) from any field who are interested in creating animations are welcome.
** Knowledge of basic graphics, design, and animation is required.

** The main objective of this event is to promote learning of Synfig Studio. If you are self-motivated and want to participate, you can self-learn Synfig Studio using Spoken tutorials. These tutorials are available in English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu.

Theme of Hackathon

We invite participants to submit animation videos, no longer than 3 minutes, on the theme “Celebrating India’s Innovation,” where they showcase a problem, the action taken, and the innovative solution presented. Whether it’s a simple yet ingenious solution found in your grandmother’s kitchen or a groundbreaking innovation that has captured the nation’s attention, we want to celebrate it all.

Please find below a list of examples of innovation:
** A farmer’s inventive irrigation system that maximizes crop yield.
** A student’s eco-friendly solution to a local environmental challenge.
** A startup’s groundbreaking technology revolutionizing healthcare accessibility.
** A traditional artisan’s adaptation of age-old techniques for modern markets.
** And many, many more.

How to Register for ANIMATE?

Read before registration
** Participate as an individual or as a team (max. 4 members).
** Ideally, a team can consist of individuals like: Synfig Studio user / animator / graphic designer / story narrator / video editor / etc.
** Use ONLY open source software for creating animations. You are not allowed to use any proprietary software in your animation in any aspect. If found, you and your team will be disqualified.
** Submissions will be accepted in 3 categories:
i. Under 18 – Junior Animation Mavericks
ii. College Students – College Creators
iii. Working Professionals – Professional Prodigies

1. What is the Animation Hackathon?
The Animation Hackathon is an online event organized by FOSSEE (Free and Open Source Software for Education) at IIT Bombay. It provides participants with an opportunity to showcase their creativity and skills by creating a 3-minute animation video on the theme “Celebrating India’s Innovation”.

2. When is the Animation Hackathon taking place?

The Registration for the Hackathon is from 18th of March to 26th of April. Last date for submission is 15th of May.

3. Who can participate?
The Animation Hackathon is open to anyone interested in animation, regardless of their background or experience level. Whether you’re a student, professional, or hobbyist, you’re welcome to join us!

4. How can I participate?

To participate in the Animation Hackathon, simply visit our website at https://animate2024.fossee.in/ and register for free.

5. What software will be used for the Hackathon?
The participants can use only Syinfig Studio software to create animation. The learning materials for Synfig Studio are available on our self paced learning partner website www.Spoken-tutorial.org in multiple languages.

While creating the animation, if you need to design graphics, record audio, or perform other tasks, you may consider using additional software. However, since this hackathon strictly requires the use of Open Source Software, you should utilize tools like GIMP, Audacity, Inkscape, etc., for these purposes.

6. Should the participant be physically present to learn the software?
The participants can learn all the software at their own pace and at a time convinient for them on our learning partner’s website. The participants need not be physically present for learning the software or for submitting the animation video.

7. Is there a theme for the animation video?
Yes, the theme for the animation video is “Celebrating India’s Innovation”. Participants are encouraged to explore this theme creatively in their animation projects.

8. Are there any language requirements for the animation video?

You can choose to narrate in English or in any of the 22 scheduled Indian languages:
(1) Assamese, (2) Bengali, (3) Gujarati, (4) Hindi, (5) Kannada, (6) Kashmiri, (7) Konkani, (8) Malayalam, (9) Manipuri, (10) Marathi, (11) Nepali, (12) Oriya, (13) Punjabi, (14) Sanskrit, (15) Sindhi, (16) Tamil, (17) Telugu, (18) Urdu, (19) Bodo, (20) Santhali, (21) Maithili, and (22) Dogri.

9. How long should the animation video be?

The animation video should be approximately 3 minutes in duration. This allows participants to effectively showcase their creativity while adhering to the specified time limit.

10. Are there any prizes for participants?

Yes, participants stand a chance to win exciting prizes, including recognition and internship at FOSSEE IIT Bombay. The total prize money for the hackathon is up to Rs. 50,000.

11. Are there any additional resources available for participants?

Yes, FOSSEE at IIT Bombay organizes online webinars to provide additional guidance and support to participants. These webinars cover various aspects of animation creation, software usage, and tips for success in the hackathon. The details of these webinars will be published on this website, so keep checking for updates.
